Mary Shah's paintings are internal landscapes informed by an synesthetic approach to their making. With music as a conduit for their palette, the paintings focus on light, poetry, time; things felt yet unseen. She has a specific interest in how one's consciousness attaches and identifies itself within these combined contexts. She was born in Glen Cove, New York in 1984. She earned her BFA from Pratt Institute in 2007. She was Director of Lennon, Weinberg, Inc. for 8 years, until the gallery closed in 2019 and later, Director at Alexandre Gallery as well as an independent curator. Her work has been presented in group and solo exhibitions since 2004, and is in public and private collections across the United States. She was selected by Michael Rose as one of the artists to follow in 2021 and included in the eponymous online exhibition. Her work was recently selected by the NYC reading series and literary journal, Pigeon Pages, to illustrate two newly published poems by poet Alexandria Hall. Her recent shows, “Dream Opera,” and “Theater of Air,” were reviewed by Jonathan Stevenson for Two Coats of Paint and six major paintings have been acquired by NYU Langone. She is represented by Rick Wester Fine Art in New York and has been showing with him since 2015.
